Farm Day and Microgreens
Farm Day at Wilby High School: A Celebration of Agriculture and Community Engagement
Wilby High School’s Agricultural Department, in partnership with Urban Fresh Gardens (UFG), hosted a successful Farm Day event in November. The event brought agricultural education to life for students and provided an engaging, hands-on experience where students explored farming concepts, interacted with animals, and participated in agriculture-themed games.
UFG brought Big Bunny (one of the first bunnies at our farm), White Bunny, Afro Duck, and his friends (other ducks and chickens). Thanks to our Farm-to-School Director, LaSonya Cromartie, our animals joined a neighboring farm, Got Your Goat, LLC, at Wilby. Got Your Duck brought sheep and goats to join in the fun.
Animals – More Exciting Than Cell Phones
The petting area for the animals quickly became a crowd favorite. The students enjoyed petting, holding, and feeding the sheep, goats, and rabbits. It was amazing to see teens -mostly – off their cell phones and instead cuddling the animals// and talking about the pets they had/have at home. It was also entertaining to watch them jostle for their turn to hold the rabbits or to get the animals’ attention.
While White Bunny and the chickens needed time to warm up to the crowd, Big Bunny, the sheep, and goats didn’t seem to mind the attention at all.
This event highlighted the importance of agricultural education and how it can enhance one’s emotional well-being and enrichment. UFG is committed to supporting future farm days and agricultural education in Waterbury.

What’s Tiny, Nutrient-Packed, Flavorful, and Easy to Grow?
Microgreens, of course! According to Webmd.com, Early research shows that microgreens ((young, edible plants harvested between 7 to 21 days old) contain up to 40% more phytochemicals (beneficial nutrients and components) than their full-grown counterparts.
We’ve been experimenting with growing microgreens, and the results have been promising! While they’re small, their impact is not: microgreens are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and incredible flavor.
Peas and sunflowers are the varieties we’ve been growing, and we like the crisp textures and vibrant flavors they add to our meals.
So you can enjoy these nutritious microgreens, we’re considering launching a microgreens subscription service. Subscribers would receive fresh deliveries of homegrown greens weekly.
Would you like to have microgreens delivered weekly to your home? Let us know by emailing us at urbanfreshgardens@gmail.com.
That’s all for now.
